Journal of Amos Hannah
March 2, 2012When I was a young girl, my aunt had this journal that was kept by my great-great-grandfather and she would let me read in it. The text was so difficult to read because the stile of writing was very different and the spelling of words in 1830. Not long before I was able to retire from my day job, I decided to try to put the journal in a book. It took me five years to read and put the text on my computer. On nearly every page of the journal Amos talked about something I did not understand. Such as: “Today I went to a poll raising” or “I have the calamorous…” or “of late there has been a great zodiacal light in the heavens.” I did a great deal of research and included with the journal text explanations of terms, places, and events. Inspiration for O. O. Octopus
March 2, 2012When my grandchildren were small, we kept them a lot in the summertime when they were out of school. Driving in the car with three kids in the back seat punching and poking each other. He hit me; he called me a name; he looked at me; when will we be there? In order to keep my own sanity, I told them stories to keep them quiet. O. O. Octopus is one of those stories. O. O. got his name from my maternal grandfather who was Dr. Oscar Owen Sutton. I wanted to call him Oscar but there was another book called Oscar the Octopus, so the sheriff became O. O. Octopus. I guess some of our happiest times with the grandchildren was spent in the car sharing and telling stories.
