Brethren We Have Met to Worship

Brethren We Have Met to Worship

The words to this beautiful old hymn were written by George Atkins in 1819. The music was written in 1825 by William Moore which he called Holy Manna.

The words and music are both in public domain. I was unable to find any personal information about either author but the message of this great old hymn should the be object and purpose of every church worship service. The focus of the message is in the first, second and fifth stanzas.

Brethren, we have met to worship and adore the Lord our God;
Will you pray with all your power, while we try to preach the Word?
All is vain unless the Spirit of the Holy One comes down;
Brethren, pray, and holy manna will be showered all around.

Brethren, see poor sinners round you slumb’ring on the brink of woe;
Death is coming, hell is moving, can you bear to let them go?
See our fathers and our mothers, and our children sinking down;
Brethren, pray, and holy manna will be showered all around.

Sisters, will you join and help us? Moses’ sister aided him;
Will you help the trembling mourners who are struggling hard with sin?
Tell them all about the Savior, tell them that He will be found;
Sisters, pray, and holy manna will be showered all around.

Is there here a trembling jailer, seeking grace, and filled with tears?
Is there here a weeping Mary, pouring forth a flood of tears?
Brethren, join your cries to help them; sisters, let your prayers abound;
Pray, oh, pray that holy manna may be scattered all around.

Let us love our God supremely, let us love each other, too;
Let us love and pray for sinners, till our God makes all things new.
Then He’ll call us home to Heaven, at His table we’ll sit down;
Christ will gird Himself and serve us with sweet manna all around.

The song begins by stating the purpose for the meeting was to worship and adore God. Next the congregation is called to pray while the preacher speaks. No one can be saved unless the Holy Spirit comes to draw them. If the congregation prays earnestly then Holy Manna will come down on the people. Manna was heavenly food given by God to the Israelites when they were wondering in the wilderness. Holy Manna here means spiritual food and blessings.

In verse two, we are told that death is certain and hell is real for those who don’t accept Christ as their Savior. Verse five is a beautiful picture of what living for Christ means and the eternal future for Christians in heaven. We must love God above all else and love each other. Love and pray for the lost. When our life on earth is over, then He will take us home where we will dine at the great banquet in heaven. Christ will belt His holy robes and serve the believers with sweet heavenly food. The song is an accurate message from scripture about how to worship, how to live and what eternal life with God will be like.
